Characteristics of Life Flashcards
What are the 8 characteristics of life
- Response to environment
- DNA
- Reproduction
- Homeostasis
- Growth and development
- Evolve/change over time
- Cells
- Uses energy and material
What is cellular organization
The order of cells, fibers, tissues, muscles, organs, organism
What are the two types of energy using organisms
Autotrophs and heterotrophs
Are viruses considered to be living, why
No; they do not have DNA, need a host to replicate and don’t really evolve
What is the lytic cycle (viruses)
Reproduction of viruses using host to make more and more viruses until the cell bursts
What is the Lysogenic cycle (viruses)
Incorporates viral genome, infects from within, can lie dormant until environment triggers it
What characteristic of life includes the building blocks of life
Made up of cells
What characteristic of life is responsible for creating offspring
Reproduction
What characteristic of life causes the organism to have a change in size or shape
Growth and development
What characteristic of life triggers metabolism or photosynthesis
Materials and energy
What characteristic of life relies heavily on the organism’s surroundings (stimuli)
Response to environment
What characteristic of life maintains a stable and constant internal environment
Homeostasis
What characteristic of life causes a change in the complexity or triggers adaptations in an organism
Change over time/evolution
