PHONETICS Flashcards
Phonetics
the study and classification of speech sounds
Articulators
We refer to all parts of the vocal apparatus which are involved in speech production as
bilabial
Sounds which, like [b] are characterized by a constriction at the lips. p, b, m, w (both lips)
Alveolar
Alveolar consonants are articulated with the tongue against or close to the superior alveolar ridge.
Labio-dentals
involve only the lower lip and additionally the upper teeth.
palatal
Palatal consonants are consonants articulated with the body of the tongue raised against the hard palate.
Velars
[k] [g] [ŋ]
raising the back of the tongue to the soft palate or velum
glottal
vocal folds
plosives
the burst of air at the moment of release, which sounds like a small explosion. [p, b, t, d, k, ɡ]
fricatives
produced by a constant flow of air through the vocal tract (f and v)
Affricates
a stoppage of the airflow, followed by a prolonged release with only a narrow opening and therefore
audible friction
lateral approximant
a consonant whose articulation involves a central occlusion with an opening on one or both sides of the tongue that is not close enough to produce friction.
central approximant
All other consonants. Air escapes through the center of the mouth.
glottis
the part of the larynx consisting of the vocal cords and the opening between them. It affects voice modulation through expansion or contraction.
diphthong
The sound is produced by combining two vowels into a single syllable or running together the sounds.
