Performed on those over 1 year of age
Finger puncture
Generally performed on children younger than one year of age or children that are not walking
Heel puncture
Most commonly used site in finger puncture
Distal end of the third or fourth finger
The incision should be
Perpendicular to the lines of the fingerprint
Any remaining alcohol while cleansing the puncture site cause
Rapid hemolysis of blood and burning sensation at the puncture site
Wipe off the first drop of blood as this may contain
Intracellular and interstitial fluid
The order of draw for Microcontainers:
- EDTA (Lavender)
- Li Heparin (Hep Gel)
- Red Top
The order of draw for Puncture:
BSLOR
1. BGA samples (Heparin)
2. Slide/Smear
3. Lavender Microcollection tube
4. Other tubes w/ anticoagulant
5. Serum collection tubes (Red top)
Do not use betadine because it can cause falsely elevated levels of
Potassium
Phosphorus
Uric Acid
Bilirubin
