Who created the Design Argument?
William Paley
When was Paley’s book released + what is it called?
‘Natural Theology’ - 1802
Use 4 words to describe the nature of the Design Argument
ANALOGICAL, TELEOLOGICAL , INDUCTIVE, EMPIRICAL
Briefly explain the design argument
When observing the world we find evidence of complex order in the world, perfect design. Such as the planets, interior design of the human body. Behind such perfect design MUST be an intelligent mind. Therefore suggests God.
What is Paley’s clock analogy?
If you found a watch/clock , you would not assume it appeared out of nothing. You would assume a watch maker made it, crafting its clogs perfectly. Therefore we must assume a world - maker created the world and it’s complex design.
How does Hume criticise the Design Argument?
He says the world is not a machine like clock work is. Why not compare it to vegetables?
Why can the design argument be criticised as anthropomorphic?
We are trying to explain creation using the human perspective of God
