what is a sacrament ?
A Christian rite / ritual that is an outward and visible sign of spiritual grace
Name the 7 sacraments of the Catholic Church
initiation :
-baptism , eucharist , confirmation

What does the word baptism mean?
- to dip
-initiation into Christian faith which involves water
-symbol of rebirth and entry into the Kingdom of God
-water washes away sin
Describe how Jesus baptised
-fully immersed into River Jordan as an adult
-baptised by John the Baptist - “look the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”
-holy spirit descended upon Jesus immediately after his baptism
What is the difference between infant + believers baptism?
infant- practiced by Catholic Church as a sacrament which involves water being poured on your forehead as a baby
believers- practiced by the Baptist Church as an ordinance which involves being baptised through full immersion in water as an adult
Give 2 reasons infant baptism is important for Catholics
-enables holy spirit to begin the work of transformation on the child’s life
-it cleanses the child of original sin
-first rite of initiation
Explain 2 reasons the baptist Church rejects infant baptism
-reject the doctrine of original sin
-Jesus wasn’t baptised as a child and he didn’t baptise children
-infant cannot make commitments
What is Holy communion and what does the Eucharist mean?
-communion = participation/ sharing in something
-Holy communion = partaking in Eucharist sacrament
-Eucharist = thanksgiving
It’s about remembering + expressing thanks for Jesus’ sacrifice
-practice was began by Jesus at the Last supper the night before he died “Do this in memory of me”
What is the form , matter and intention of Holy Communion?
form - ritual actions and words used. where the bread and wine and ‘made holy’ . Includes the Priest invoking the presence of the Holy Spirit
matter - the bread and wine that Catholics believe literally become the blood and body of Christ (transubstantiation)
intention - celebrate mass, give thanks to God
