Pharyngitis definition
Inflammation of the pharynx
Pharyngitis viral pathogens
Rhinovirus is the most common
Pharyngitis bacterial pathogens
Group A strep is the most common
Nonspecific symptoms of pharyngitis
Sore throat, fever, erythema
Symptoms of Group A Strep pharyngitis
Sudden onset of sore throat, age 5-15, fever, headache, tonsillopharyngeal inflammation, palatal petechiae, tender nodes, scarlatiniform rash
Symptoms of viral pharyngitis
Conjunctivitis, coryza, cough, diarrhea, hoarseness, discrete ulcerative stomatitis, viral exanthema
Diagnosis of pharyngitis
Treat everyone with a positive RADT test (adults) and kids with a negative RADT test and a positive throat culture
Pharyngitis treatment
Penicillin VK or amoxicillin for 10 days
PCN allergy: Cephalexin for 10 days
Severe PCN allergy: clindamycin for 10 days or azithromycin for 5 days
Pharyngitis treatment for patients with unlikely adherence
Benzathine penicillin IM x1
Adjunctive pharyngitis treatment
APAP, NSAIDs, topical anesthetics
