Stages of pertussis
Stage 1: catarrhal stage
Stage 2: paroxysmal stage (whooping cough)
Stage 3: convalescent stage
D/T/P vaccines for children
DTaP, DTaP-IPV-HepB, DTaP-IPV-Hib, DT
D/T/P vaccines for adolescents and adults
Td, Tdap
Age <7 years should get what D/T/P vaccine?
DTaP or DT
Age ≥7 years should get what vaccine?
Td
Age ≥11 years should get what vaccine?
Tdap
When should you get a booster shot?
Every 10 years for diphtheria and tetanus (if no injury),
Tetanus: every 5 years for tetanus if at risk, and 1 year after last dose if severe injury
Pertussis: give 1+ booster dose following DTaP series
Tdap during pregnancy
Recommended during pregnancy during the last trimester or postpartum
D/T/P adverse effects
Redness, swelling, pain, fever
D/T/P CIs
Severe allergic reaction, history of encephalopathy within 7 days of pertussis vaccination
