Pharyngeal Arches Flashcards
What are the 5 pharyngeal arches?
- mandibular
- hyoid
- third
- fourth
- sixth
Muscles of the mandibular arch
1st
mastication:
mylohyoid, anterior belly digastric
Innervation of the mandibular arch
Trigeminal nerve (V3) - mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve
Muscles of the hyoid arch:
facial expression:
-posterior belly digastric, stylohyoid
Innervation of the hyoid arch:
facial nerve - CN VII
Muscles of the 3rd pharyngeal arch
stylopharyngeus
Innervation of the 3rd pharyngeal arch
glossopharyngeal nerve IX
Muscles of the 4th pharyngeal arch
cricothyroid, inferior pharyngeal constrictor
Innervation of the 4th pharyngeal arch
vagus nerve X, superior laryngeal branch
Muscles of the sixth pharyngeal arch
Intrinsic laryngeal–> for changing tension on the vocal cords (sound production)
Innervation of the 6th laryngeal arch
vagus nerve X - recurrent laryngeal branch
What are the two types of motor axons:
motor–> skeletal muscle
branchial motor –> motor innervation of skeletal muscle that arose from the pharyngeal arches
What are the 4 categories of sensory axons:
- impulses from skin
- impulses from viscera
- special sensory- taste, smell
- special sensory- vision, hearing, equilibrium
What is the function of preganglionic and postganglionic sympathetic and parasympathetic axons?
innervation of smooth muscle
