Craniofacial and Extraocular Muscles Flashcards
Buccinator innervation
buccal branch of the facial nerve (CN VII)
Buccinator function
compresses cheek (when blowing), presses cheeks against teeth when chewing
Depressor anguli oris attachments
from mandible to angle of mouth (fibers run superior to inferior)
Depressor anguli oris innervation
buccal and mandibular branch of the facial nerve (CN VII)
Depressor anguli oris function:
depresses angle of mouth laterally (frown, sadness)
Depressor labii inferioris attachments
from oblique line of mandible to the skin of the lower lip
Depressor labii inferioris innervation
mandibular branch of the facial n.
Depressor labii inferioris function:
depresses lower lip (pouting, sadness)
occipitofrontalis muscle attachments:
from the superficial fascia of the eyebrows to the epicranial aponeurosis
occipitofrontalis innervation:
temporal branch of the facial nerve
occipitofrontalis function:
protracts the scalp or elevates eyebrows & nose (surprise or curiosity)
Levator labii superioris attachments:
from the inferior orbital margin to the lateral aspect of the upper lip
Levator labii superioris innervation:
buccal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve
Levator labii superioris function:
raises and everts the upper lip (showing sadness)
Nasalis attachments:
from the maxilla lateral & inferior to the nasal notch to the bridge & ala of the nose
Nasalis innervation:
buccal branch of the facial nerve
Nasalis function:
transverse fibers compress & alar fibers widen the nasal aperture (flaring nostrils during anger or exertion)
Orbicularis oculi attachments:
from orbital margin & medial palpebral lig. to superficial fascia of the eyelid
Orbicularis oculi innervation:
temporal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve
Orbicularis oculi function:
a palpebral sphincter (closes eyes, winking)
Orbicularis oris attachments:
from angle of mouth to the superficial fascia of the upper lip
Orbicularis oris innervation
buccal & mandibular branches of the facial n.
Orbicularis oris function:
an oral sphincter (closes mouth, kissing)
Platysma attachments
from the lower border of the mandible to the superficial fascia of the skin of the neck overlying the clavicle
Platysma innervation:
cervical branch of the facial n.
Platysma function:
wrinkles the anterior nuchal skin (conveying tension or stress)
Zygomaticus major attachments:
from zygomatic bone to angle of mouth
Zygomaticus major innervation:
buccal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve
Zygomaticus major function:
raises the angle of the mouth (smiling, happiness)
inferior oblique of the eyeball muscle innervation:
inferior ramus of the oculomotor n. (CN III)
Inferior oblique of the eyeball muscle function:
elevation, abduction, and extorsion of the eye
inferior rectus innervation:
inferior ramus of the oculomotor nerve (CN III)
inferior rectus muscle function:
depression, adduction, and extorsion of the eye
Levator palpebrae superioris innervation:
superior ramus of the oculomotor nerve (CN III)
Levator palpebrae superioris function:
elevation of the upper lid
Medial rectus innervation:
inferior ramus of the oculomotor nerve
Medial rectus function:
adduction of the eye
Superior rectus innervation:
superior ramus of the oculomotor nerve
Superior rectus function:
elevation, adduction, and intorsion of the eye
Lateral rectus muscle innervation:
abducens nerve
** ABDUCENS FOR ABDUCTION
Lateral rectus muscle function:
ABDUCTION of the eye
superior oblique muscle of the eye innervation:
trochlear nerve CN IV
** GOES AROUND THE TROCHLEA OF THE EYE
superior oblique muscle of the eye function:
depression, abduction, and intorsion of the eye
What is the trochlea of the eye?
The trochlea is a saddle-like cartilaginous structure in the superior and medial region of the orbita, which contains the tendon of the superior oblique muscle.
** ACTS AS A PULLEY FOR THE SUPERIOR OBLIQUE MUSCLE OF THE EYE
