Muscles of Mastication Flashcards
What is the innervation of ALL the muscles of mastication?
branches of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (V3)
(mandibular n. V3)
masseter attachments
zygomatic arch to the angle of the mandible and lateral aspect of the ramus
function of the masseter:
elevation, protraction, and retraction (deep fibers) of the mandible
temporalis muscle attachments
**specifically innervated by deep temporal n. of mandibular nerve (V3)
from the temporal fossa to the coronoid process and anterior border of the ramus of the mandible
temporalis function
elevation and retraction (posterior aspect of the muscle) of the mandible
lateral pterygoid muscle attachments
(superior head) from the infra temporal surface of the sphenoid and (inferior head) lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate (sphenoid bone)—-> neck of the mandible and the TMJ articular disc
- DEEP TO THE TEMPORALIS AND THE MASSETER
lateral pterygoid function:
depresses mandible, protracts & acts with the ipsilateral medial pterygoid to rotate the mandible to produce the side-to-side movements during chewing
** R pterygoids move the mandible laterally to the LEFT (contralateral side)
medial pterygoid attachments:
from the medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate & adjacent maxilla to the medial aspect of the angle of the mandible
medial pterygoid function:
elevation of the mandible & acts with the ipsilateral lateral pterygoid to rotate the mandible to produce the side-to-side movements during trituration of food
