Pharmacology Exam 2 Flashcards
What does CNS stand for?
Central Nervous System
What is the Somatic Nervous System responsible for?
Sensory and motor movement
What are the two divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System?
Sympathetic - fight and flight; Parasympathetic - rest and digest
What are the 7 areas affected by the nervous system?
BP, HR, RR, Temp, Water balance, Urinary excretion, Digestive function
What is the primary function of Beta 1 receptors?
Heart/cardiac
What is the primary function of Beta 2 receptors?
Lungs - vasodilation
What effects do Alpha 1 receptors have?
Blood vessels - vasoconstriction, iris dilation, bladder closure
What is the function of Alpha 2 receptors?
Insulin release
What are the effects of a sympathetic response?
Increased BP, Increased HR, Bronchodilation, Decreased bowel sounds
What is the neurotransmitter and receptor of the PNS?
Cholinergic drugs - Acetylcholine
What is the neurotransmitter and receptor of the SNS?
Adrenergic drugs - Norepinephrine
What are Muscarinic receptors responsible for?
Pupil constriction, GI motility, increase bladder contraction, saliva, slow heart rate, in some vascular smooth muscle
What are Nicotinic receptors responsible for?
Skeletal system; muscle contraction
What do adrenergic blocking agents do?
Block effects of sympathetic nervous system, block norepinephrine from receptor site, decrease BP, decrease HR, increase renal perfusion
What is myasthenia gravis?
Chronic muscular disease caused by a defect in neuromuscular transmission of voluntary muscles (Tensilon diagnostic)
What drug is used for Alzheimer’s?
Donepezil (indirect cholinergic agonist)
What is Dobutamine?
Beta and Alpha Adrenergic Agonist (IV) - management of HF by increasing myocardial contractility
What is Dopamine used for?
Beta and Alpha Adrenergic Agonist (IV) - management of shock, increased BP, HR, and improved renal flow
What is Epinephrine used for?
Beta and Alpha Adrenergic Agonist (IV, IM, SQ, Nebulizer) - management of shock, allergic reactions, asthma attacks
What is Norepinephrine used for?
Beta and Alpha Adrenergic Agonist (IV) - management of shock, increases BP
What is Phenylephrine used for?
Alpha Specific Adrenergic Drug - management of hypotension, increases BP by constricting blood vessels
What is Midodrine used for?
Alpha Specific Adrenergic Drug - management of hypotension, increases BP by constricting blood vessels
What is Clonidine used for?
Alpha Specific Adrenergic Drug - management of hypertension, decreases BP and HR
What is Isoproterenol used for?
Beta Specific Adrenergic Drugs (IV) - treats shock, bradycardia, heart blocks
