What do GABA drugs do?
GABA drugs cause relaxation so can be used prior to surgery and also used as anti anxiety drugs as anxiety is when the brain cant switch off (inability to relax).
All drugs will promote GABA release.
What do Sympathetic Adrenergic drugs do?
Adrenergic = works on the sympathetic nervous system. Uses norepinephrine and epinephrine as its neurotransmitter. Helps in the fight and flight response.
Direct acting drugs = helps improve breathing by opening of wind pipe.
Indirect acting drugs = anti depressants so increases levels of epinephrine.
Direct acting blocking drugs = Reduce blood pressure. (epinephrine is a mood elevator and therefore increases blood flow so a blocking drug will stop that from happening and therefore reduces blood pressure).
What do cholingeric drugs do?
They work on the parasympathetic nervous system. Works on the rest and digest system. Cholinergic messages tighten muscles so cholinergic blocking drugs relaxes muscles.
Direct acting drugs = can increase bladder output and stop cravings for stuff.
Direct acting blocking drugs = Relaxes muscles for diseases.
Indirect acting drugs = used to relax muscles in diseases and before surgery.
Indirect acting blocking drugs = Used for BOTOX and improves memory.
What do Histamine Drugs do?
All histamine drugs are anti - histamines so stop the production of histamine. Histamine is a chemical released when the body detects something harmful, such as an infection. The body mistakes something harmless, such as pollen, for a threat. It then produces histamine, which causes symptoms such as rashes, a runny nose and/or sneezing. Antihistamines help stop this happening if you take them before you come into contact with the substance you’re allergic to.
What do Glutamate Drugs do?
Glutamate is a neurotransmitter in the brain that works on the excitatory pathway. Glutamate is involved in cognitive functions such as learning and memory in the brain. Can also be a relaxant.
