What is Epilepsy?
Recurrent attack of involuntary behavior caused by electrical activity in the brain
What is each episode of epilepsy called?
A seizure
Majority of epileptic patients have what type of epilepsy?
Idiopathic ( cause unknown)
Seizures are divided into two large groups, those groups are?
Absence Seizures
Tonic Clonic Seizures
What is an Absence Seizure?
Where there is a brief loss of consciousness with little movement (lasts a few seconds)
What is a Tonic Clonic Seizure?
Longer periods of loss of consciousness and major activity of the large muscles of the body
What does Tonic mean?
Stiffening of limbs
What does Clonic mean?
Limbs and face begin to jerk
What are Status Epilepticus seizures?
Continuous tonic clonic seizures that last longer than 30 minutes
What are partial (Focal) seizures?
Seizures that involve activation of only part of the brain (last a few minutes)
What type of partial (Focal) seizures are there?
Simple
Complex
What is a simple partial seizure?
Where consciousness is not impaired
What is a complex partial seizure?
Where consciousness is impaired
