Pharmacology: Anti-nausea and anti-emetic drugs Flashcards
What receptors are used in nausea/vomiting
- Serotonin receptor blockers
- NK1 blockers
- H1 receptors
- D2 receptors
- M1 receptors
- Cannabinoid receptors
ending of Serotonin (5-HT3) receptor antagonists?
“setron”
- we use them a lot
- very strong
one worriesome side effect of 5HT
Dose-dependent QT prolongation and Torsades
Which one has the long half life?
Palonosetron
-single dose is good
Neurokinin 1 receptor NK1 (substance P) antagonists ending?
“pitant”
Therapeutic use of NK1?
chemotherapy induced N/V
Which ones have long half lives?
Netupitant and Rolapitant
Histamine (H1) receptor antagonists?
DDHPMC
-no pattern… :(
Use of H1
run of the mill general nausea and vomiting
- used with something else usually… usually a setron
- a little sedation which is nice
- they are anticholinergic so remember that
Vertigo?
meclizine and cyclazine
Dopamine (D2) receptor antagonists?
CPP
-they are phenothiazines
metoclopramide
can stimulate Ach actions in GI, enhancing it’s motility… increases lower esophageal sphincter tone
-so it’s great for dysmotility problems
Therapeutic uses of D2?
Idopathic
-Dysmotility (metoclopramide)
The ONE muscarinic receptor antagonist?
Scopolamine
- pretty great for sea sickness
- patch that you put behind the ear
Cannabinoid receptor agonist
Dronabinol and Nabilon
- basically, synthetic THC
- Strong antiemetic agents
