Pharmacology Flashcards
What is the mean inhibitory concentration?
concentration of drug needed to kill 99.9% of organisms during 18-24hours
What are the characteristics of aminoglycosides?
given with high concentration then are cleared quickly
What are the characteristics of betalactams?
have a longer lasting MIC so can be givne multiple times a day
What must be cleared before antibiotics can be affective?
pus
Where is it hard for antibiotics to get into?
areas with tight junctions - CNS, eyes, prostate
What are the ways that bacteria can become resistant??
active efflux - pushes antibiotic out of the cell
target replication - makes antibiotic less effective
modified drug target
decreased permeability - alters its cell wall structure so decreased penetration
drug interacting enzymes - bacteria produce inactivating enzymes
