Pharmacology Flashcards
Phenytoin toxicity
horizontal nystagmus, ataxia, confusion
Lithium toxicitity
seizures, hyperreflexia, tremors, vomiting, diarrhea
neuroleptic malignant syndrome
AMS
muscle rigidity
fever >40
autonomic instability
Dantrolene if supportive fails
salicylate toxicity
normal pH
respiratory alkalosis with metabolic acidosis (due to uncoupling of electron transport)
Foscarnet
ganciclovir drug-resistant CMV
Mupirocin
treats nasal colonization of MRSA
b-blocker toxicity
WHEEZING
AV block
brachycardia
REVERSE WITH GLUCAGON
atropine mechanism
reversible competitive antagonist of MUSCARINIC ACh receptors
Pyridostigmine mechanism
inhibits cholinesterase to increase ACh (DOESNOT cross BBB)
Fibrates
Used to reduce isolated hypertriglyceridemia
Rarely used in conjunction with statins
complications of antithyroid meds
agranulocytosis
PTU: liver damage, ANCA vasculitis
Methimazole: cholestasis; teratogen
complications of radioactive iodine
could worsen ophthamopathy from antibody
Tricyclic overdose
anticholinergic effects
cardiac effects on sodium channel
inhibits fast sodium channels
QRS over 100ms requires sodium bicarb (REDUCES action on cardiac sodium channels but changing pH and thereby drug avidity to channel)
