Pharmacology Flashcards
1
Q
Agonist
A
• Drug that enhances effect of a neurotransmitter
2
Q
Antagonist:
A
• Drug that inhibits effect of a neurotransmitter
3
Q
Competitive Binding:
A
- Binds to same binding site as neurotransmitter
- Can be antagonist or antagonist
- Binds to orthosteric site
4
Q
Noncompetitive Binding:
A
- Binds to a different site
- Can be another neurotransmitter that is not the primary neurotransmitter
- Bind to allosteric site (not binding site of neurotransmitter)
- Called neuromodulators or allosteric modulators
- Usually enhance or diminish function of neurotransmitter
5
Q
Amino Acid Neurotransmitter:
A
- Fast acting
- Direct synapses
- i.e. glutamate, GABA, Glycine, Aspartate
6
Q
Monoamine Neurotransmitter:
A
- Synthesized from one amino acid
* Localized
7
Q
Catecholamines
A
• Synthesized from tyrosine
o i.e. dopamine, norepi, epi
o Tyrosine-> L-Dopa->Dopamine->Norepinephrine->Epinephrine
8
Q
Idolamines
A
• Synthesized from Tryptophan
o i.e Serotonin
