Q

Zero order kinetics? Example?

A

Constant AMOUNT of drug

Important Examples are Phenytoin, salicylate, theophylline, thiopental, and of course Ethanol!!!

This implies metabolic saturation.

Q

First Order Kinetics

A

First = Fraction

The amount metabolized is directly proportional to drug volume.

This is the MOST COMMON way most medications are metabolized.

Q

What are the most important highly protein bound drungs?

Why is this important to know?

A

Phenytoin, Coumadin, diazepam, propranolol

since they competitively compete for receptors and are mostly protein bound, administering two of these drugs simultaneously will greatly increase FREE drug.
