Pharmacology Flashcards
hypersensitivity rxn
ACID- mneumonic I. anaphylaxis II. cytotoxic- destroy cells III. Immune complex mediated IV. Delayed
sulfonylurea
stimulate beta cell release, increase insulin sensitivity
can induce hypoglycemia
ex- glyburide
biguanide
metformin
can cause lactic acidosis (usually in kidney disease)
don’t give if have kidney failure
decreases glucose production in liver
TZD
sensitizes muscles to insulin
HEPATOTOXICITY
Increase CV risk
pioglitazone (actos) , rosiglitazone (avandia) end in glitazone
H2 antagonist
cimetidine (tagament- can cause gynecomastia and galactorrhea), ranitidine (zantac), famotidine (pepcid)
PPI
omeprazole (prilosec), lansoprazole (prevacid), pantoprazole (protonix)
Antacids
mylanta and malox
milk alkali syndrome- get alkalemic
what can pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) cause
black stool
Iron can cause this too
Phenothiazines
inhibit dopamine
nausea and vomiting
procholperzine (compazine), promethazine (phenergan)
HMG co A reductase inhibitors
Statins
block cholesterol synthesis in liver
can cause myopathy and rhabdomyolysis
lipitor and zocor
steroid side effects
CUSHINGOID cataracts ulcers skin striae hypertension/hirsutism infection necrosis of femoral head glucose elevated osteoporsis impaired wound healing depression/diabetes
reversal for hypoglycemia from beta blockers
glucagon
what can digoxin cause
blue green vision
Halo’s in vision
most common side effect of nitro
headache
also causes hypotension
need to be careful not to use erectile dysfunction drugs with this
Heparin MOA
Unfractioned heparin- inhibits xa and increases antithrombin III activity
LMWH only increases antithrombin 3 activity
reversal agent- protamine sulfate
