Pharmacological therapy: Hyperosmotics Flashcards
1
Q
Types of hyperosmotics
A
- glycerine
2. mannitol
2
Q
MOA
A
increase osmolality blood
- create osmotic gradient - draws H2O from vitreous humour = decrease IOP
3
Q
What does the dehydrated viterous humour cause?
A
posterior mov of lens = cause anterior chamber to deepen = opening anterior angle
4
Q
Glycerine 1-1.5G/kg as 50% soln given orally
A
- patient not vomiting
5
Q
mannitol 15-20% soln -can be given IV dose 1-2G/kg over 30-60mins
A
has N/V
6
Q
common complaints
A
headaches + thirst
7
Q
already dehydrated at risk of what?
A
- CNS dehydration
- lead to coma
8
Q
used with caution
A
renal / cv disease as extracellular H2O increased
