Pharmacokinetics: Module 1-Section 04 Flashcards
What is pharmacokinetics?
Refers to the movement of a drug into, through, and out of the body.
What are the 3 routes of administration?
Topical, Enteral, Parenteral
What is a topical route?
Drugs that are applied through the skin, on the skin or inhaled.
What is a enteral route?
Drugs administered through the GI tract, entering through the mouth or an artificial opening. Such as, mouth, rectum or sublingual/buccal.
What is a parenteral tract?
A drug administered bypassing the GI tract. Such as intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous.
What is systemic effect?
A descriptor used to indicate something that affects the whole body or multiple organ systems.
What is bioavailability?
The fraction of an administered dose that reaches the blood in an active form.
What is the A in ADME?
Absorption
What is the D in ADME?
Distribution
What is the E in ADME?
Excretion
What is the M in ADME?
Metabolism
What is absorption?
The movement of a drug from the site of administration into the blood.
What is distribution?
The movement of a drug from the blood to the side of action and other tissues.
What is metabolism?
The conversion of a drug to a different chemical compound in order to eliminate it.
What is excretion?
It refers to moving the drug and it’s metabolites out of the body.
