Drug Action: Module 1-Section 03 Flashcards
Ligand
Molecule that binds to a receptor
Agonists
Drugs that bind to and stimulate a receptor
Antagonists
Drugs that bind to but block the response at a receptor
What happens in low doses for a drug dose relationship?
Little response is observed as not as many receptors are being activated.
What happens at the threshold level of a drug dose relationship?
More receptors are being activated until the desired response is seen.
What happens in therapeutic doses?
One a threshold is reached, a small increase in a dose results in a large increase in response.
What is a maximal effect in a dose response relationship?
After this point, no amount of drug added will have no effect in the response.
In a dose response curve, what does the Y-axis represent?
Effect of the drug is labeled here. The maximal response is set at 100%.
In a dose response curve, what does the X-axis represent?
The dose of the drug is represented here.
What is ED50?
The dose of the drug that will result in 50% of the maximal effect. It can also be interpreted as the dose of drug that is effective in 50% of a population.
What is efficacy?
The maximum pharmaological response that can be produced by specific drug in that biological system.
What is potency?
It is the dose of a drug that is required to produce a response of a certain magnitude.
