Pharmacodynamics Flashcards
What’s the difference between specific and selective ligands?
Specific-effective at a target
Selective-moderate effectiveness at a target
Why do we get side effects from drugs?
Because the drug is not specific, so as well as targeting its target cell, it also works on other similar cells.
What is endocrine signalling?
Long distance
What is paracrine signalling?
Short distance
What’s the difference between juxtactine and autocrine signalling?
Juxtacrine- contact is needed
Autocrine- affects the cell that secreted it
Name the four types of receptors
Ligand gated ion channels
G protein coupled receptors
Kinase linked receptors
Nuclear receptors
What are nuclear receptors activated by?
Signalling molecules like cytokines, hormones
What activates a G protein coupled receptor?
A ligand
Which receptor is very fast at acting?
Ligand-gated ion channels.
How many times does a G protein coupled receptor go through the cell membrane?
7
Which type of receptor uses GTP?
G protein coupled receptors
