Pharmacodynamics Flashcards
Define Pharmacodynamics
This is how the drug acts on the body
Define Striking dose
This is defined as a large dose at the start of the treatment
List the mechanism of action sites
1= receptors (Transmembrane G protein-coupled receptors)
2=ion channels
3=enzymes
Where are receptors located
Cell membrane
cytoplasm
Nucleus
Define agonist
This is when a drug bind to a receptor and produces a maximum biological response
Define partial agonist
This is when a drug binds to a receptor and produces a response lower than an agonist
Define antagonists
This is a drug which inhibits a receptor site and prevents the binding of a drug to form a ligland. An example of this is naloxone this is antagonist of opioid
Competitive antagonist= binds to the agonist site of the receptor
non-competitive antagonist= binds to a different side of the receptor
Define intrinsic activity
This is the ability of a drug to cause effect after an action
Define affinity
The likeness of. a drug to create a lock and key mechanism
Define synergism
This is the interaction of two or more drugs to create a stronger result
Define summation
includes two drugs i.e
1+1=2 the affect does not exceeds the sum
Define synergism
This is when both drugs combined are less than the sum. i.e 1+1=1.5
Define potentiation
This is when the sum of the drug exceeds the sum. i.e 1+1+ 5
Define sensitisation
This is when two drugs causes a stronger affect
Define material accumulation
This is the increase of drug amount in the organism
Define functional accumulation
This is the accumulation of the drug effect on the body
Define tolerance
This is a gradual decrease in drug action after repeated administration
Define Tachyphylaxis
This is an instant drop in drug effect immediately after one dose of administration
