Antipsychotic Drugs Flashcards
What are 1st generation antipsychotic drugs (Tranquilizers )
These drugs have a high affinity to inhibit the domapine D2 receptor. Higher risk of developing extrapyramidal symptoms (effect motor function)
What are 2nd generation antipsychotic drugs
We use 2nd generation
have fewer extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) than the first-generation agents, but are associated with a higher risk of metabolic side effects, such as diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and weight gain. The second-generation drugs appear to owe their unique activity to blockade of both serotonin 5-HT2A receptor and dopamine receptors and other receptors such as cholinergic, adrenergic and hitaminergic
Where are the receptors found for Dopamine
The brain and the peripheries
What are the use of antipsychotic drugs
reduce hallucinations associated with schizophrenia
reduce disruptive behaviour and extreme anxiety
Antiemetic (prevents nausea and vomiting)
What are the side effect of antipsychotic drugs
anticholinergic effects
blocks a-adrenergic receptors
Sex dysfunction
Postural hypotension
Extrapyramidal symtoms
Sedation
Dry mouth
Arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death
Weight gain
Seizure
List the antipsychotic drugs
