Anesthetics Flashcards
What is the purpose of anaesthesia
sedation and reduction of anxiety
Lack of awareness and amnesia
Skeletal muscle relaxation
Analgesia
Suppression of undesirable reflexes
What are the affects of anaesthesia on organ systems
Cardiovascular system- suppress cardio- vascular function to varying degrees.
Respiratory system- Inhaled anaesthetics depress the respiratory system and act as bronchodilators. IV anaesthetic agents and opioids suppress respiration.
Liver and kidney- he release of fluoride, bromide, and other metabolic products of the halogenated hydrocarbons can affect these organs
Nervous system- make patient more relaxed
Pregnancy- This can affect the babies organs and may cause teratogenic affects such as cleft pallet
What are the 3 stages of anaesthesia
Induction- IV propofol causes unconsciousness. Then IV skeletal muscle relaxant
Maintenance
Recovery
