Q

Opiods

A
  • May be used to control intense as well as less severe pain.
  • Most potent analgesic.
  • Works by depressing the Central Nervous System thus, reducing pain.

Q

Sublimaze

A

Fentanyl (citrate)
Uses: Control severe pain
Adverse Effects: Respiratory depression, shock, death.

17
Q

Anesthetics

A

Reversibly depress neuronal function, producing loss of ability to perceive pain.

Two types – General and Local.

General anesthetics can be administered through inhalation (gas) or intravenously (liquid).

General anesthetics are central nervous system depressants, resulting in muscle relaxation and loss of consciousness and therefore, used in major surgical procedures.

Local anesthetics block nerve conduction from an area of the body to the CNS.

Overuse of topical anesthetics can lead to excessive absorption of the drug, and may cause irregular heartbeat (arrythmia), seizures, breathing difficulties and death.

18
Q

Xylocaine
(Anesthetic)

A

Generic Name: Lidocaine
Uses: Inhibits the initiation and conduction of neural impulses thereby, effecting local anesthetic action
Adverse Effects: Flushing, itching and warming at site of application/injection. Bruising, bleeding, pain, burning or swelling at the application site (less common)

19
Q

Xylocaine
(Antiarrhythmic)

A

Generic Name:Lidocaine
Uses: Treat serious ventricular arrhythmias.
Adverse Effects:Cardiac arrest, respiratory depression, convulsions

20
Q

Cordarone
(antiarryhtmatic)

A

Generic Name: Amiodarone hydrochloride
Uses: Treat ventricular fibrillation
Adverse Effects: Pulmonary toxicity, ataxia (lack of muscle control and coordination, hypothyroidism

21
Q

Pentothal
(General Anesthetic)

A

Generic Name: Thiopental Sodium
Uses: Slow CNS activity
Adverse Effects: Bronchospasm, drowsiness, slow heartbeat

22
Q

Diprivan
(General Anesthetic)

A

Generic Name: Propofol
Uses: Slows CNS causes sense of relaxation, sedation, stop seizures

23
Q

Xanax, Ativan, Valium, Versed
(Tranquilizers)

A

Generic Name: Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Diazepam, Midazolam
Uses: Reduce anxiety, high doses can produce hypnosis
Adverse Effects: Brachycardia, drowsiness, physical dependence

24
Q

Heparin
(Anticoagulant)

A

Generic Name: Heparin Sodium
Uses: Inhibits formation of fibrin clots
Adverse Effects: Hemmorage, Platelet deficiency

25
Coumadin (Anticoagulant)
Generic Name: Warfarin Uses: Prevention of emboli (travelling thrombus) Adverse Effects: Hemmorage and blood in urine
26
Prozac
Generic Name: Fluoxetine Uses: to treat depression
27
Benadryl
Diphenhydramine Treat anaphylaxis Drowsiness dizziness
28
Antihypertensives
- Controls high blood pressure - Capoten/Captopril - Vasotec/Enalpril
29
Antihypertensives: Beta Blockers
- blocks the effect of epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine. - Suppresses the Sympathetic Nervous System, causing the heart to beat slower and with less force, reducing BP. - Inderal/Propanolol - Lopressor/Metroprolol
30
Anti-inflammatory
- NSAIDs & Glucocorticoids** (Steroids) - Relief of inflammatory symptoms caused by severe allergic reactions and trauma. - Suppresses every component of the inflammatory process - Cortisol/Hydrocortisone -Medrol/Methylprednisolone
31
Bronchodilators
- Treat asthma, COPD - relax smooth muscles and dilates the respiratory passage - ventolin/Albuterol/Salbutamol
32
NaCl Solution
IV fluids to maintain homeostasis
