pharm final Flashcards
What are Antilipemic drugs
Used to lower lipid levels in the blood reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors (Statins)
Used to lower LDL cholesterol
Most effective for lowering cholesterol
Common Statin Drugs
-ends in “-statin”
-Atorvastatin
-Simvastatin
-Rosuvastatin
Fibric Acid (Fibrates)
Used to lower triglycerides
Common Fibric Acid drugs
-has “-fib”
-Genfibrozil
-Fenofibrate
Bile Acid (BABA)
Lower LDL’s
Bile Acid drugs
-has “chole” “cole”
-Cholestyramine
-Colestipol
-Colesevelam
Considerations for BABA drugs
It can interfere with the absorption of other medications and fat-soluble vitamins like ADEK
If taken with other medications take 1 hr before or 4-6 hours after
Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors
Used to lower LDL by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine
Can often be used with statins for enhanced effect
Common Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitor drugs
-Ezetimibe
Niacin (Vitamin B3)
Used to lower LDL and triglycerides, but raises HDL
Common drugs for Niacin
Niacin
Omega-3 fatty acids
Used to lower triglycerides
What are Antiparkinson drugs used for
Antiparkinson drugs are used to manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, which is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremors, bradykinesia, and postural instability
Dopaminergic Agents
Increases dopamine levels or mimic its action to improve motor symptoms
Dopaminergic agent drugs
Levodopa/Carbidopa
-effective in controlling bradykinesia and rigidity
(avoid high protein meals bc it can interfere with absorption)
MAO-B Inhibitors
avoid the breakdown of dopamine extending its effect
Common MAO-B drugs
-Selegiline
-Rasagiline
COMT Inhibitors
Prolong the effect of levodopa by avoiding its breakdown
Common COMT drugs
-Entacapone
-Tolcapone
Anticholinergics
Reduce tremors and rigidity by blocking acetylcholine
Common Anticholinergic drugs
-Benztropine
-Trihexyphenidyl
