Q

describe the difference between affinity, efficacy, and potency of agonist

A
  • affinity refers to the strength of the binding between agonist and receptor
  • efficacy- the ability of the agonist to activate the receptor and produce a response
  • potency - the concerntrattion of an agonist required to produce specific effect

Q

explain the difference between full, partial and inverse agonist

A
  • full = activate the receptor fully and produce a maximal response
  • partial = activate the receptor and produce a submaximal response
  • inverse agonist = bind to the inactivate state of the receptor and reduce the constitutive activity

Q

explains the general classes of anatagonism

A
  • competitive = competes with the agonist to bind to the receptor
  • irreversible = irreversibly binds to the receptor so that the agonist can not bind

Q

define the effect of competitive and irreversible competitive on the agonist dose response curve

A
  • competitive antagonism shifts it to the right without affecting the maximal respsinse
  • irreversible = reduces the maximal respsinse of the agonist

Q

how is the schild plot and equation used to quantify antagonism

A
  • the school equation is used to determine the anatagonistbptency and affinity
  • the schilds plot is a graphical representation of the equation which allows the determination of the antagonists PA2 value
