Phagocytosis (Non Specific Immunity) - 11/12/23 Flashcards
What are some examples of phagocytes? [2]
- Macrophages
- Neutrophils
What is a Phagoctye?
A type of WBC that engulf and destroy microorganisms (phagocytosis)
Describe the stage of Phagocytosis.
1) Phagocyte is attracted to pathogen (by chemical products of pathogen).
2) It moves towards pathogen along concentration gradient
3) The phagocyte has several receptors on its cell-surface membranes that attach to chemicals on the surface of pathogen
4) Pathogen engulfed
5) Phagosome formed
6) Lysosomes inside phagocyte migrate to phagosome (formed by englufing the bacterium)
7) The lysosomes release lysozymes into phagosome
8) Pathogen is hydrolysed
9) Hydrolysis products of bacterium are absorbed by phagocyte
How is phagocyte attracted to pathogen?
By chemical products of pathogen
How does phagocyte travel to pathogen?
Along concentration gradient
What does WBC do to pathogen at end of phagocytosis?
It’s absorbed by phagocyte
What type of immunity is Phagocytosis?
Non-Specific
What are 4 Features of a Non-Specific Response?
- Immediate
- Same for all pathogens
- Include physical barriers
- Includes phagocytosis by phagocytes
What is a phagosome?
A vesicle, but with bacterium in the middle
What is a lysosome?
A vesicle with lysozymes in the middle
What do microorganisms need to get past first to get into body?
Physical and Chemical Barrier
