PH and electrolyte imbalances Flashcards
Organs in charge of PH balance
- kidney
- lungs
Carbon acid equation
Co2 + H2O combine = H2CO3 = H+ + HCO3- (bicarbonate)
occurs in tissue but backwards it occurs in blood and lungs
What is Respiratory acidosis (too many acids)
- decrease CO2 output = increase hydrogen irons in blood
- Occurs when decrease in ventilation
= CNS depression
Kidneys role in resp acidosis
- Increase HCO3- reabsorption
- Increase H+ excretion (secretion)
S+S Resp acidosis
- Headache
- Visual disturbance
- Lethargy
- Disorientation
What is resp alkalosis
- increase CO2 output = decrease H+ in blood
= hyperventilation
what causes resp alkalosis
-Hypoxemia
- Pain
- Anxiety
- Fever
- Sepsis
Kidneys role in respiratory alkalosis
-Increase H+ reabsorption
- Increase HCO3- secretion/excretion
S+S of respiratory alkalosis
- dizzy
- confusion
- muscle cramps
- twitching
Two things that lead to Metabolic acidosis
- increase in bicarbonate loss
- hydrogen gain
= too much acid (H+) in blood
What causes loss of bicarbonate loss (metabolic acidosis)
- increase renal or GI loss
= renal failure
What causes increase H+ gain (metabolic acidosis)
- Increase lactic acid production
- Ketoacidosis
- Exposure of acidic substances
Lungs role in Metabolic acidosis
- Hyperventilation (increase CO2 offload, increase H+ gain)
S+S Metabolic acidosis
- Headache
- Lethargy
- Confusion
- Hyperventilation
What causes Metabolic alkalosis
Increase H+ loss or too much HCO3- gain
= not enough acid in blood
