Endocrine Flashcards
1
Q
What occurs during hyperthyroidism
A
- # increase thyroid = increase BMR = increase SNS
- increase weight loss + increase appetite
- anxious, irritable
- heat intolerance
- increase HR
- warm, moist skin
- muscle tremors/weakness
2
Q
What is hypothyroidism, S+S
A
- # decrease thyroid levels = decrease BMR
- weight gain
- lethargic, mental sluggishness
- cold intolerance
- decrease HR
- cold, dry
- decrease reflexive action, muscle weakness
2
Q
What is Grave’s disease
A
- causes hyperthyroidism
- antibodies that mimic TSH
- stimulates increase TH production and increase secretion
3
Q
Grave disease/hyperthyrodism management
A
- anti-thyroid drugs
- radioactive iodine
- thyroid ectomy
4
Q
what causes hypothyroidism
A
- hashimoto’s
- thyroiditis
- iodine deficiency
- congenital complications
5
Q
Management of hypothyroidism
A
- synthetic thyroxine
6
Q
what is hypercortisolism/cushing’s sydrome
A
- increase cortisol =
-increase glycogenolysis - increase gluconeogenesis/lipolysis
- increase protein breakdown
- decrease immunity/inflammation
- wide effects on cardiovascular and nervous system
7
Q
hypercortisolism/cushing’s sydrome causes
A
- Medication (steroids) = mimic cortisol
- Increase ACTH (due to pituitary adenoma)
- adrenal tumors
8
Q
Patho of S+S of hypercortisolism/cushing’s sydrome
A
- Protein breakdown
- Muscle wasting
- increase risk of fracture = osteoporosis
- skin changes = easily bruising, shin tears, stretching - alter lipid metabolism
- fat re-distribution = moon face, fat to back of the neck, increase abdominal fat - decrease immunity/inflammation = increase susceptibility
9
Q
Cushing’s syndrome/hypercortisolism management
A
- gradual withdrawal of steriods
- tumour removal
- steroid inhibitors
10
Q
what is Addison’s disease/hypoadrenalism
A
- Decrease aldosterone, decrease cortisol, decrease gonadocorticoids
11
Q
Addison’s disease/hypoadrenalism causes
A
Autoimmune adrenalitis, certain infections, adrenal trauma
12
Q
Addison’s disease/hypoadrenalism patho S+S
A
- Fatigue
- Muscle weakness
- Weight loss
- Nausea and vomiting
- Decrease Na+ and increase K+
= hypovolemia and hypotension - Hypoglycemia
- Hyperpigmentation of skin
13
Q
Addison’s/ adrenal crisis (life threatening)
A
Hypovolemia shock + severe hypoglycemia
14
Q
Addison’s/ adrenal crisis management
A
Hormone supplementation
