P.g 130-135 Flashcards
Species that asexually reproduction rely on cell division called…
Mitosis
What happens in the growth phase?
The cells synthesis proteins and double their sizes (interphase)
What happens in interphase?
Proteins are manufactured and the cell organelles multiply. And before the DNA splits the DNA makes a copy of itself.
Briefly, what happens in the early phases of interphase?
The DNA becomes visible, divides, and forms two nuclei.
What are spindle fibers?
Thread-like proteins that controls the moment of DNA in the cell.
What is the early stage of interphase called?
Mitosis
What happens in the late stage in interphase?
The cell divides, halving the controls of the cytoplasm, including the organelles. This process is called cytokinesis.
What is the name of the two newly formed cells?
Daughter cells.
List 4 advantages of asexual reproduction.
1) Time and energy efficient
2) Requires one parent
3) The only kind of cellular division that asexual species have is mitosis.
4) Organisms that reproduce asexually can take advantage of empty terrain, such as land.
What are chromosomes?
They are the DNA lengths.
What is the name of two DNA chromosomes before mitosis?
Sister chromatids
What is the centromere?
Where the paired chromatids are joined.
What is the name of the 4 stages of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
What happens in Prophase?
1) The chromosomes are duplicated coiled up and become much shorter and thicker.
2) The cell membrane is broken down and becomes less visible
3) The centrioles divide and move to opposite poles.
What controls the spindle fibers?
Centrioles
