Bio asexual and sexual reproduction, cells to baby Flashcards
what is asexual reproduction?
Process in which only requires one parent to be present thus causing the off-spring to be genetically identical.
What is sexual reproduction?
Process in which requires two of the opposite gender to be present and each one of them contribute half of their DNA to their offspring.
What is DNA
found in the Nucleus, it is a chemical instruction manual.
What is the DNAs purpose?
Determines the characteristics of an organism including their appearance, body structure, and even the enzymes that help it digest its chromosomes.
What are clones?
Offsprings that are genetically identical due to Asexual reproduction
What is Binary fission?
When single-celled organisms produce asexually through a process of cell devision known as binary fission. (Splitting into two)
What happens to the parent in Binary Fission?
In binary fission, when the two daughters are produced, the parent cell no longer exists.
Advantages of Asexual reproduction?
1) It is faster
2) the population can increase rapidly when the conditions are favourable.
3) only one parent in needed
4) it is more time and energy efficient as you don’t need a mate.
5) It is faster than sexual reproduction
What is budding?
When a bud from on the wall of the parent cell. At the same time, the DNA in the nucleus makes a copy of itself then divides in two
What is regeneration?
The ability to replace a lost or damaged organ or part by forming a new tissue; many invertebrates and even some vertebrates can regenerate some of their parts.
The reason for cloning?
Cloning that involves animals with assisted reproduction technology aims to increase the population of exceptional livestock and extremely rare pets.
What is a gamete?
A gamete is the sex cells
What is a zygote?
When the female gamete (Ovum) meet the male gametes (sperm) and the eggs is fertilized a new cell of a zygote is produced.
