Cells to baby Flashcards
What is menopause?
When a woman stops having her menstruation cycle and is no longer capable of getting pregnant due to old age.
What is morula?
When the zygote develops into a solid ball of cells.
What is blastocyst?
After the morula, the ball of cells become hollow and become a blastocyst that reaches to the uterus
What is embryo?
When the inner layer of the blastocyst develops into an embryo after meeting the uterus.
Process of pregnancy after the embryo meets the uterus?
The placenta is nourished, after 4 weeks the umbilical cord is formed, amniotic sac forms, then the amniotic fluid.
What are mammary glands?
Glands located on the chest
What type of placentas do humans belong to?
Placental mammals
What is marsupials?
When they have very rudimentary placentas or none at all; when their offspring is are born undeveloped, they leave their mothers vagina and climb into their pouches.
What is monotremes?
They’re embryos develop inside the the egg/ third subclass of mammals.
Function of the placenta?
Allows the exchange of nutrients and wastes between fetus and its mother’s blood supply.
Why can’t the blood of the mother and her offspring meet?
Because, the mothers immune system will think that the baby’s blood is a “foreign” since its sexual reproduction. Which is why we have countercurrent flow.
The sex of the baby depends on what?
H-Y antigen protein; if those gonads are present the gonads turn into testes and begin to secrete the hormone testosterone. If the H-Y antigen isn’t present the gonads develop into female reproductive organs.
Babies birthed before the due date are called what?
Premature
Does the amount of fetuses in the womb affect the gestation period
With twins around 3 weeks and with triplets around 6 weeks earlier; babies from multiple births tend to be smaller than singletons however combined together the fetuses and their physiological demands are greater than for a single baby, and multiple pregnancies pose greater risks for the mother too.
