Burst to numerous rapid coughs
Sudden inspiration creates high-pitched whoop
Cheeks become cyanotic
Eyes may bulge tongue protrudes
Vomiting
Exhaustion
More common at night
Last 4 to 6 weeks
What happened during the convaslecent stage?
Coughing gradually stops
Paroxysmal cough may return
Last 2 to 3 weeks
What are the complications of Pertussis?
Pneumonia
Apnea
Neurological
Pressure effects paroxysms (nosebless, hernias, rectal.prolapse)
Adolescents ( syncope, sleep disturbance, rib fractures, incontinence)
What are the nursing intervention s of Pertussis?
Continuous assessment of respiratory status
Watch for hypoxic during coughing spells
Ensure oxygenation
Suction prn
Reduce factors that promote cough
Small frequent meals
