It is caused by the bacteria

or Bordet Gengou Bacillus)
B. pertussis produces many antigens and other
products such as:
o Pertussis toxin
o Filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA)
o Agglutinogens
o Adenylate cyclase
o Pertactin
o Tracheal cytotoxin

STAGES OF PERTUSSIS
Stage 1: Catarrhal or Prodromal Stage
1-2 weeks of symptoms
symptoms resembling the common cold, such as fever, runny nose, and a mild cough
Among infants,
apnea (or pauses in breathing) is typical
Patients are highly contagious in this stage.
STAGES OF PERTUSSIS
Stage 2: Paroxysmal Stage
1-6 weeks
paroxysmal coughing–many, rapid, violent coughs followed by a “whoop” as the individual struggles to breathe and recover
Among babies, paroxysmal
coughing is not very common; instead, during
this stage, apnea is more common, becoming
evident when the babies turn “blue” or
cyanotic.
STAGES OF PERTUSSIS
Stage 3: Convalescent Stage
2 to 3 weeks|
when gradual recovery occurs
(improvement of cough and less coughing fits)
Antibiotics
. Since whooping
cough is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are the primary course of treatment
The most popular are
azithromycin, clarithromycin and
erythromycin.
Vaccine
DTP
TDP
which is given to infants and children in five
doses, starting at 2 months of age.
Tdap is
only for those above age 7.
