learned and developed, based on life experiences- environments, parents friends, memories
What are the big 5 core traits
Openness
Conscientiousness
Extraversion
Agreeableness
Neuroticism
Openness spectrum
open to new things and variaty or strict and regular routine
Extraversion spectrum
easy to connect with vs shy
agreeableness spectrum
able to change mind and be flexible vs being rigid, unable to change mind
Neuroticism spectrum
how emotionally stable one is, confident and assured of oneself vs anxious / timid
Conscientiousness spectrum
impulsive and careless vs careful and disiplined
External locust of control
– environment and context determines what decision/response will be; external factors influence decision making
Internal locust of control –
control to make decision and explore outcomes of situations comes from inside them –> they are the final say on how they will respond
personality is persistent and enduring meaning
in some state, core of person is still the same just slightly different in different context and personaility last a long time and takes a long time to form.
What two time frames are personality belived to be developed
toddlerhood (3-6) and adolescents
Borderline personality disorder -
Relationships tend to be manipulative + controlling, characterized often by self harm or big emotional outburst. Learned behaviours from childhood trauma or stress.
Anti-social personality –
-lack empathy
=Empathy allows you to be social & understand others.
=You are the only “real” person, and everyone is “less”
pyschopathy or sociopathy
Ego-dystonia
disrupted by change, are aware of symptoms of problem and take steps to fix it
Ego-syntonic
- recognize symptoms but don’t see problem with it; don’t see dissonance or disconnect.
- Don’t recognize they have anything to do with it.
- Believe behaviour/actions align with personal goals, values, and beliefs
