What is beneficence
“doing good”, taking actions that promote the well-being and best interest of others and removing conditions that cause harm
What is autonomy?
a persons right to make their own decisions about their life, body, and treatment. Free from coercion or interference.
What is non-maleficence
“do not harm” avoid causing unnecessary injury, suffering, or risk to others.
When is it ethically okay for the nurse to break confidentiality
when their is clear indication of harm to a patient or others. Especially when vulnerable populations such as children are involved.
What is equality
treating everyone the same, regardless of their background, identity or circumstance
What is fairness
recognizing individual needs and circumstance to ensure everyone has a fair chance to succeed.
What is certification
A person is certified under the provincial Mental Health Act when they are admitted to a designated treatment center to receive treatment for their mental illness AGAINST THEIR WILL.
what is the mental health act
This is provincial law to ensure the treatment of those with mental health issues who need protection and care
- protects those certified from being taken advantage of or abuse.
- and protects those providing care under the MH act
What are the four criteria for certification
- person suffering from mental disorder that impairs thier ability to react appropriately to their envirnment.
- person requires tmt in hospital so they do not become more ill
- person should be in hospital to prevent substantial mental/physical deterioration or to protect other people
- person would not seek help on their own
