What features characterize PDs? (4)
- usually causes psychological pain to self and others
- recognizable in adolescence or early adulthood
- one of the most difficult disorders to treat
- many sufferers aren’t even aware of their disorder
3 clusters of personality disorders
Cluster A: odd and eccentric - MAD
Cluster B: dramatic and erratic - BAD
Cluster C: anxious and timid - SAD

Schizoid, schizotypal, paranoid

Histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, borderline

Obsessive-compulsive, avoidant, dependent

- deep distrust and suspicion of others
2. suspicion is not bizarre enough to remove the individual from reality

- avoidance of social relationships
- limited social expression
- withdrawn and reclusive
- prefer to be alone
- flat / cold / dull

- extreme discomfort in close relationships
- bizarre thinking
- magical thinking
- peculiar beliefs

- disregard/violate others’ rights
- most linked PD to criminal behavior
- impulsive
- lie repeatedly
- cruel and sadistic and violent
4 main features of borderline PD
- very unstable self image and relationships
- major mood swings
- bouts of anger that can lead them to hurt themselves
- self-destructive behavior (drug abuse, unprotected sex, suicidal threats)

- seek to be center of attention
- need approval and praise to feel good
- manipulative; suicide attempts

- lack empathy for others
- grandiose beliefs about themselves
- need admiration
- appear arrogant
- take advantage of others to succeed

- feelings of inadequacy
- think they’re unappealing
- little or no friends
- fear close social relationships
