- Deviance (behavior and emotion)
- Distress (to the individual)
- Dysfunction (interference with daily life)
- Danger (risk to self and others)
What is trepanning?
Drilling a hole in the side of someone’s heads in hopes of letting the evil spirit out
What are the 4 humors?
Black bile, yellow bile, blood and phlegm
What is purging?
Medical bleeding to rid the body of blood to balance out the 4 humors. An imbalance was believed to be the cause of mental illness
What is animal magnetism?
The idea that people’s thoughts can be controlled by cosmic forces and the forces can be altered
What is hydrotherapy?
Putting agitated patients in a warm bath until they calm down
What is the icepick lobotomy?
Walter Friedman’s take on the frontal lobotomy. Insert an icepick in the brain through the eye socket, often left people in vegetative states. All mental hospitals started doing it
