Because if a bipolar person is prescribed SSRI’s, they will shift into mania and things will get way worse

A

Phototherapy: exposure to blue light which inhibits melatonin, also can simulate dawn

Serotonin Syndrome

A

Too much 5-HT in the brain that can be lethal. Causes cardiovacular issues.
Casued by taking SSRI’s and another 5-HT agonist (ex: MDMA)

What is post-partum depression (PPD)?

A
  • dramatic change in certain hormones which are also in the brain
  • within 4wks PP
  • can have psychotic features
  • women w/ a history of a mood disorder are more susceptible

What is Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)?

A
  • at least one of depressed mood, anxiety, easily affected mood, or irritability
  • 5-11 symptoms during most cycles over the past year
  • 2-5% of women

How is PMDD different than PMS?

PMDD has more severe psychological symptoms, whereas PMS is more focused on physical symptoms
