What is a personality disorder?
Characteristic or enduring patterns of inner experience and behaviour that differ from societal norm.
Usually affects more than one aspect of personality.
When are personality disorders most commonly diagnosed?
After 18yo.
What does heritability mean?
How much of a genetic influence there is on a disease.
What % of personality disorders are influenced by genetics?
Around 60%.
What are cluster A personality disorders also referred to as?
Odd and eccentric.
Includes paranoid and schizoid.
What are cluster B personality disorders also referred to as?
Dramatic and emotional.
Includes dissocial, emotionally unstable and histrionic.
What are cluster C personality disorders also referred to as?
Anxious and avoidant.
Includes anakastic and dependent.
Are drug therapies helpful in personality disorders?
Anti-psychotics can reduce suspiciousness in cluster A personality disorders.
Anti-depressants can help with mood in cluster B and anxiety in cluster C.
What can be used in personality disorder crisis management?
Benzodiazepines
Short-term only.
Is in-patient treatment used in personality disorders?
No, can make patient worse.
Only advised if a danger to themselves/others.
What is the prognosis for personality disorders?
Most stabilise over time.
