Ppl high in:
- Extroversion
- Conscientiousness
- Openness to exp
Neuroticism
Extroversion:
- Open to new forms of communication (but more disclosure)
- Happier relationships bcuz thrive in social situations
Conscientiousness:
- Popular after high school
- Dependable, trustworthy partner but can have poor communication and have unrealistic goals
Openness to experience:
- Social media, more sexual encounters
- Happier relationship bcuz more expressive and supportive listening
Neuroticism:
- More arousal during conflict and poor resolution skills
- More cost-inflicting mate retention behavs (cost-inflicting vs benefit provisioning)
Ppl high in:
- Avoidant attachment
- Anxious attachment
Avoidant attachment:
- Prefer face to face communication; less likely to use dating sites
- Happier relationships when finding someone who can handle their behav
- But can assert autonomy in r intellectually challenge partner
Anxious:
- Addicted to texting + using social media
- Feel freer to express w/out fear of judgment and can consider what to say better

Authenticity
Ability to reason in regard to emotions + use emotions to enhance reasoning
Ability to be open and hinwst in meaningful relationships in multiple contexts
Shyness
Discomfort in social settings and avoiding interactions
- Fear if negative self-evaluation
- Low self-esteen
- Low social skills
Study: Helping shy ppl (Leary)
- Meet and greet stranger in loud or soft condition
- Looked at change in BPM
When noise soft, high shyness more aroused
- Removing threat of personal failure may help overcome shyness

- 11th and 12th graders - Who id primary attachment figure?
- Securely attached maintain childhood attachment to parent
- Insecurely attached transfer attachment to peer (esp avoidant)

- 4-year longitudinal study
- T1 + T2 adult attachment, relationship status
- T2 number of new relationships and breakups
- Most ppl had the same attachment style (but esp securely attached)
Changes:
- Securely attached w/ breakup
- Avoidant attachment w/ new relationship
Strong influence of early attachment, most remain stable
- But breakup and positive relationship exps can change style
Study: Attachment and perceived responsiveness (Collins and Feeney)
- Romantic couples; one person spontaneously recorded speech and received unambiguous/high support or ambiguous/low support note
- How supportive was note + partner’s behav before speech?
- Unambiguous supportive notes positively rated
- But insecurely attached - Ambiguous note and behav upsetting

Study: How individuals in long term marital relationships feel about sexual relationship (Butzer and Campbell)
- Self report, questionnaire (attachment style, sexual satisfaction, marital satisfaction)
- Own attachment style and partner’s avoidant style had negative impact on sexual satisfaction
Correlation between sexual and marital satisfaction:
- Avoidant - Low marital no matter what sexual
- Anxious - High sexual w/ high marital
