Personal Track Safety - Part 1 Flashcards
What is the Overhead Neutral Section (ONS)?
A stretch of the OLE that is unpowered
What does a milepost with the number 15 on top and one vertical dash underneath mean? (1)
15 miles and 20 chains (15 and 1/4 miles)
What is the ECO responsible for?
Controls the power supply to the electric traction system. Responsible for all switching operations.
What voltage is the overhead power line and what should it always be considered?
*25,000 Volts A/C (Alternate current)
*LIVE
What is the four-foot? (1)
The space between the two running rails on a line
What PPE is required when on or near the line? (4)
*Clean, Northern Branded hi-visibility vest, zipped up.
*Non-slip safety shoes
*Safety goggles (maintenance depot only)
*Bump cap (maintenance depot only)
What is the position of safety when the line speed is up to 100mph? (1)
1.25m from the running rail
What should you NEVER do when there is a conductor rail present?
*step on or touch the Conductor Rail or protective guard boarding
*allow clothing, tools or equipment to touch the Conductor Rail
*step between the Conductor Rail and the adjacent running rail
*touch broken or displaced Conductor Rails or collector shoes
*step in flood water which may be in contact with a Conductor Rail or direct
water or any other liquid on a Conductor Rail
What does “On or near the line” mean? (3)
*ON the line itself
*Within 3m of a running line where no permanent structure or fence exists
*Within 1.25m of the platform edge while carrying out engineering or technical works
What should you do if you notice that part of the OLE is broken?
Report it to the ECO
What should you do if you notice that a NATIONAL GRID powerline is broken or has collapsed onto the track?
Report to ECO/Signaller so they can have the line isolated
When are you permitted to use a mobile phone when on or near the line? (2)
*When in a position of safety
OR
*In an emergency
What is a facing point? (1)
When 1 line becomes 2
Why should tools and equpment be kept away from the running rail? (1)
They can interfere with the axle counters and track circuits.
What is the position of safety in a line between 101mph and 125mph? (1)
2m from the running rail
What voltage is the third (conductor) rail and what should it always be considered? (2)
*650-750 Volts D/C (Direct current)
*LIVE
What is a trailing point? (1)
When 2 lines become 1
What is the ten-foot? (1)
The wider area between two or more sets of lines
Name the parts of a MULTI track layout? (4)
*Cess
*Four-foot
*Six-foot

- Tunnels
- Weather
What is the safe distance from the overhead power line? (1)
2.75m
What information is contained on the structure ID plate? (3)
*Route/area
*Miles from route source
*Structure/mast number within that mile
How far away should any tools or equipment be from the running rail?
2m
What should your mobile phone be in when on the track? (1)
Silent mode
What should you NEVER wear when on or near the line? (4)
*Hoods
*Headphones
*Sunglasses
*Anything red, green or yellow
What do lines and dots mean on a milepost? (1)
Chains (the dots and the lines are interchangeable)
What is a position of safety? (1)
A safe place to stand when a train is passing.
Name the 4 components of the track? (4)
*Running Rails
*Ballast
*Sleepers
*Fastenings
What does “lineside” mean? (1)
When you are between the railway boundary and the area called on or near the line.
What is the safe distance from a NATIONAL GRID powerline?
5m
What does a milepost with 23 and 3 dots mean? (1)
23 miles and 60 chains (23 and 3/4 miles)
What is the six-foot? (1)
The space between a pair of lines
Name all of the parts of the OLE (overhead line equipment) (11)
