Why did the Persians win the Ionian Revolt?
- Persian army was much larger and stronger, the Greeks were outnumbered
- the revolts took place in Asia Minor, the Persians probably knew the place better
What is the reason for the Ionian Revolt’s occurrence?
The Persians conquered the Greek colonies in Asia Minor and the Greeks there wanted to defend their democratic system and usual way of life

What is the reason for the Battle of Marathon’s occurrence?
The Greek city-states helped the colonies in Asia Minor in the Ionian Revolt, so King Darius of Persia wanted to punish them
Why did the Greeks win the Battle of Marathon?
- use of tactics: Greeks used phalanx (united formation of soldiers to attack) to outflank the Persians from both left and right, but the Persians expected to fight individually
- quality of army: Greek: well-trained, well disciplined; Persian: large but scattered and poorly organised, also exhausted from voyage

A Greek traitor showed the Persians a secret passageway that allowed them to strike the Greeks from behind

Why did the Greeks win the Battle of Salamis?
- Greeks were united and had high spirits as they fought for their homeland Greece, but the Persians were not. They did not fight for their country, but for a salary
- Tactics: the Greeks successfully led the Persians to sail to shallow water and the narrow strait so that the Persian ships crashed into each other
- Persian ships were large and clumsy. The Greek ships were fast and flexible enough to ram the middle of the Persian ships, the weakest part of the ships
What is the reason for the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Salamis’ occurrence?
Conflicts and desire to take revenge between the Persians and Greeks continued, and hence there were more wars between them
