Permanent Magnetic Principles Flashcards
What is the two forms of Magnets?
Permanent magnets & Electromagnet
What is a permanent Magnet?
Permanent magnets are materials where the magnetic field is generated by the internal structure of the material itself.
What are Electromagnets?
temporary magnets which are created when current flows through a coil of wire.
What is Magnetic flux?
a force of attraction or repulsion between magnetic materials carried by invisible magnetic field lines called magnetic ‘flux’ that surrounds all magnets.
Name the properties of magnetic flux:
- Completely closed curves
- Definite direction – North to South
- May be distorted or bent to any shape (by other magnetic fields), but they never cross each other.
- Perfectly elastic
- Can extend to any length, or contract and vanish when the magnetising force is removed
- Pass unaffected through any non-magnetic substance
What is the magnetic field pattern?
Direction of magneti flux from North to South
What is the magnetic field patern of a bar magnet?
What is the magnetic field pattern for a Horseshoe magnet
State the two laws of magnetism in regards to like and unlike poles of magnets:
Like poles repeal & unlike poles attract
North pole + North pole = repeal
South pole + South pole = repeal
South pole + North Pole = attract
