Magnetic Materials Flashcards
What defines a magnetic material?
A substances exhibit some degree of magnetism and are affected by a magnetic field.
What defines a ferromagnetic material?
Material which are ‘strongly’ attracted to a magnetic field
What is a paramagnetic material?
Materials which are only ‘weakly’ attracted to a magnetic field
Give an example of a ferromagnetic material?
- Iron
- Cobalt
- Nickel
Give an example of a paramagnetic material:
- Molybdenum
- Magnesium
- Lithium
- Aluminium
- Tantalum
- Oxygen
What is a diamagnetic material?
Materials which are ‘weakly’ repelled by a magnetic field
Give an example of a diamagentic material:
What is a manufactured magnet?
made from alloys of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic/diamagnetic materials in varying quantities to achieve different magnetic properties.
What is a ‘hard’ magnet
A magnet that retain their magnetism for a long time after they are initially magnetised.
What is a soft magnet?
A magent that loses their magnetism quickly after the magnetising force is removed.
What is a rare-earth magnet?
Very strong, compact magnets made from the alloys of rare earth elements.
