Permafrost Flashcards
what is permafrost
a layer of permanently frozen soil (0c for over 2 years)
consequences of permafrost thawing
loss of infrastructure, landslides, realease of stored carbon as methane a powerful GHG(contributing to global warming acceleration)
good consequence of thawing permafrost
increase of vegetation
explain the release of methane
because permafrost is thawing faster and soil is remaining thawed for longer period of time this causes more plants to grow but also an increase in decomposers. decomposition releases greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide into the environment, contributing to global warming.
what about carbon trapped in ice
carbon trapped in ice is also released as permafrost melts
explain how loss of infrastructure and landslides occur
When the ice in permafrost melts, the ground becomes unstable and can slump, causing rock and landslides, floods, and coastal erosion. The buckling earth can damage buildings, roads, power lines, and other infrastructure.
