2. once the surface is heated, it emits infrared rays into the atmosphere and some of those rays escape back into space
3. greenhouse gases trap some infrared rays and send them back to the earth heating its surface even more
   simplified:
   sun heats earth,earth radiates heat, some heat escapes atmosphere some is traped by greenhouse gas and emits back to earth
